BROOKLYN

I was born and raised in Brooklyn. No, not hipster Brooklyn. Real Brooklyn. Yes, this is a sensitive topic.

Here is a list of some of my favorite spots that are as Brooklyn as it gets.

Roll N' Roaster - 2901 Emmons Avenue
This "not-so-fast fast food restaurant" is a staple in Southern Brooklyn. As a kid, you have birthday parties there. Then when you're a teenager, you hang out there after seeing a movie on Friday night. And you keep going back. You can put "cheez on anything you pleez" and spin a wheel on your birthday for free treats. They're known for their roast beef sandwiches, cheez fries, lemonade and milkshakes. Because it's the best. Hands down.

Brennan & Carr - 3432 Nostrand Avenue
Roast beef sandwiches with extra broth. Adorable Irish teenage boys waiting tables. A menu that I don't think has ever changed. It's cozy and home and perfect.

L&B Spumoni Gardens - 2725 86th Street
Do not even try to tell me there's better pizza than Spumoni Gardens - because you'd be wrong. Dead wrong. And I'm talking about their sicilian pie. If you're from Brooklyn, you already knew that. If someone gets a round slice, they stick out like a sore thumb and should just go home. This is the place to be on summer evenings. They now serve pizza at the Barclays Center in Downtown Brooklyn, but trust me, it's not the same. Get on the D train and go to Bensonhurst to experience the real thing.

The Brooklyn Cyclones - 1904 Surf Avenue
The New York Met's minor team league is right on the beach in Coney Island and is always a good time. The staff has a lot of fun coming up with different theme nights and creative bobble heads like this one memorializing Cyclone Alum, Ike Davis, and his famous crazy-amazing catch as a NY Met. To top it off, they have Friday Night Fireworks that are second to none. It's as Southern Brooklyn as it gets and you'll run into everyone you know and their mom.
